This article shows you how to find your Operating System and Internet Browser versions. This information is helpful if you are encountering problems and need to contact technical support.
An Operating System is the name for the environment in which all the programs on your computer run. It is normally a version of either Windows or Mac OSX.
The following guide shows you how to find out which operating system you are using. Please note that steps may differ slightly between operating systems, so don't worry if the screenshots look different from what you see.
There are four main versions of Windows, plus separate sub-versions. The main version are Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.
1) Click on the Start Menu and navigate to the Control Panel.
2) Look for an option named System. Click on this to open up the System Information dialog. Your operating system version will be shown in full here.
To find the version number on Mac OSX, click the Apple symbol at the top-left of the screen and select About This Mac. The version number is shown in the dialog box that appears.
Your Internet Browser is the program that you use to view websites. If you haven't downloaded a new browser, such as Chrome or Firefox, then it is likely that you will be using a version of Internet Explorer.
This guide deals with finding your version number in Internet Explorer. Methods will be similar in other browsers, but may differ. If you are using a different browser please refer to the provider's help documentation for more information.
1) Open Internet Explorer. Depending on which version you are using you will see either a Help entry in the menu bar or a ? symbol near the top right-hand corner of the screen. Click on this to show the help menu.
2) Select About Internet Explorer from this menu. This opens a dialog box that contains the version number.
